Richard M. Adams, Executive Chairman of the Board

Richard M. Adams is Executive Chairman of the Board of United Bankshares, Inc. and United Bank. A Parkersburg native, he is a graduate of West Virginia University and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University.

Adams began his banking career as a Management Trainee with Wachovia Bank and Trust in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Later, he returned to his roots in West Virginia to join The Parkersburg National Bank. At the age of 29, he was named President and CEO of what was The Parkersburg National Bank (predecessor to United), a single-office, $100 million in assets, community bank. Under Adams’ leadership, United completed 33 acquisitions and currently has assets of approximately $29.5 billion, 3,000 team members and nearly 250 banking and mortgage offices located throughout Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Washington, D.C. United Bank, headquartered in Vienna, Va., is the largest state-chartered bank headquartered in the Commonwealth.

Richard Adams is a member of the Bank Policy Institute, the World President’s Organization, and is a Board Member of the WV United Health System. Adams is a Past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the West Virginia Business Roundtable, the WV Chamber of Commerce, WV Kids Count and Eastern States Bankcard Association in New York. He has been a member of the International Financial Conference and served on the American Bankers Association Governing Council. Adams also served on the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency Regional Advisory Council, the Young President’s Organization of America and the Rotary Club.

In 2020, Adams received the Washington Business Journal’s CEO COVID Response Leader Award. In addition, Adams has been inducted into the West Virginia Business Hall of Fame and has been honored as a recipient of the Ernst & Young “Lifetime Achievement Award” and the Executive Magazine CEO of the Year Award. Adams was selected by Morningstar, Inc. as one of three nominees nationwide for their CEO of the Year Award and was ranked #20 in the Washington Business Journal “Power 100” listing. He also has published articles in various national banking journals. Adams was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves and served on the Vestry of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.

Richard M. Adams, Jr., Chief Executive Officer

Richard M. Adams, Jr. is Chief Executive Officer of United Bankshares, Inc. and Vice-Chairman of United Bank. He joined United in 1994 and served as President of the Bank from 2014 to 2022 and previously as Executive Vice President from 2000 to 2014. Adams, Jr. brings deep banking experience and industry expertise that has enabled him to successfully drive the business to become one of the nation’s top performing banks.

Prior to joining United, Adams, Jr. worked as an associate at Bowles Rice, LLP and practiced law in the areas of Commercial Law, Real Estate, Employment Law and Litigation. He received his law degree from the Washington and Lee School of Law and performed his undergraduate studies at Pepperdine University and Rollins College. He is a member of the West Virginia State Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

Adams Jr., is active in several community and industry-based organizations, including the Federal City Council, the Financial Services Roundtable, the American Bankers Council, the Mid-Size Bank Coalition of America and the Greenbrier Health and Wellness Advisory Council. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Bankers Association and is a past Chairman of the West Virginia Bankers Association and the West Virginia Bankers Trust Division.

James J. Consagra, Jr., President

James J. Consagra, Jr. serves as President of United Bankshares, Inc. He is responsible for overseeing the operation of day-to-day banking activities including all sales and service lines of business, commercial and consumer lending, retail banking and wealth management.

With decades of banking experience, Consagra has served in various roles, including Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of United Bank. Prior to joining United, he served as both Treasurer and Director of George Mason Bankshares, Inc., and Executive Vice President of George Mason Bank. Previously, he worked as a Certified Public Accountant.

Consagra received a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting from James Madison University, and he currently serves as a Trustee on the Board of George Mason University Foundation.

W. Mark Tatterson, Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer

W. Mark Tatterson is Chief Financial Officer at United Bankshares, Inc. He is responsible for developing and administering UBSI’s corporate financial strategies, as well as oversight of accounting management, external financial reporting, investor relations and the corporate treasury function. He joined United in 1997 and has served in various keys roles across credit risk management, treasury and finance.

Mr. Tatterson earned his undergraduate degree in Finance from West Virginia University. He is also a graduate of the American Bankers Association’s Stonier Graduate School of Banking.

Ross M. Draber, Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer

Ross M. Draber currently serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of United Bankshares, Inc. Joining the organization in 2010, he previously served as Chief Operating Officer of United Bank, a subsidiary of UBSI, and as Chief Administrative Officer. Throughout his tenure, he has played an integral role in the Company’s expansion efforts through several mergers and acquisitions.

A graduate of Washington and Lee University, Draber earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Business Administration, and he is a Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) charterholder. He was also honored in the Washington Business Journal 40 Under 40 Class of 2017.

Douglas B. Ernest, Executive Vice President, Chief Credit Officer

Douglas B. Ernest serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Credit Officer of United Bankshares, Inc. He is responsible for overseeing the quality of the Company’s loan portfolio, including underwriting, credit administration, special assets and establishing policies. Ernest’s team works to maintain United’s strong credit culture and credit risk management.

A seasoned banking professional, Ernest has held various positions at United, such as Commercial Loan Officer, Market President, Regional President and Credit Risk Manager. Ernest holds the designation of Credit Risk Certified (CRC) by the Risk Management Association and is also a graduate of the American Bankers Association Stonier Graduate School of Banking and Commercial Lending School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from St. Mary’s College of Maryland and a MBA from West Virginia University.

Julie R. Gurtis, President

Julie R. Gurtis serves as President of United Bank, overseeing all banking services and nearly 250 locations across the Company's footprint. Joining the Bank in 1990, she previously served as Chief Commercial Banking Officer, and throughout her career with the Bank, she also held other various roles, including Commercial Lender, Market President and Regional President.

Active throughout the Bank’s communities and industry organizations, Gurtis currently serves as Treasurer on the Board of West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities. She also previously served on boards with Charleston Area Alliance, YWCA Charleston and West Virginia Symphony.

Gurtis is a graduate of West Virginia University, earning her undergraduate degree in finance.

Matthew L. Humphrey, Executive Vice President and Head of Wealth & Investment Management

Matthew L. Humphrey serves as Executive Vice President and Head of Wealth & Investment Management. Joining the Company in 2016, he leads the overall management of and strategic planning for United Wealth Management and also serves as Chief Executive Officer of United Brokerage Services, Inc.

Prior to joining United, Humphrey served in the Private Wealth Management Group of Goldman Sachs, where he advised high net worth families, foundations and institutions. Humphrey also served in multiple leadership positions as an Army Aviation Officer in Korea, Central America, Afghanistan and the United States.

A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Humphrey earned his Bachelor of Science in Economics and Civil Engineering. He also earned his MBA from Vanderbilt University with concentrations in finance, strategy and entrepreneurship. He holds the following licenses: Series 7, Series 24 and Series 66.

Charles J. Mildren, Executive Vice President and Chief Consumer Banking Officer

Charles J. Mildren serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Consumer Banking Officer of United Bank, leading all consumer lines of business, including mortgage, home equity, direct and indirect lending, retail branches and consumer credit cards. Beginning his career with United Bank in 2000, he previously served as Regional President in West Virginia, Market President of the Parkersburg Market and Vice President, Commercial Loan Officer.

Throughout his career, Mildren has made serving his community a top priority. He is the former chair and current secretary of the Wood County (W. Va.) Economic Development Authority, helping to support business growth in the community. Since 2010, Mildren has been the chair of the annual Kids Golf Classic, a fundraising tournament to support the Boys & Girls Club of Parkersburg. He is a past chair of the United Way of the Mid-Ohio Valley and board member of the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport. Mildren is also on the board for the West Virginia Bankers Association, serving as the board chairman in 2022.

Mildren is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Georgetown University.

Michael P. Proctor, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Banking Officer

Michael P. Proctor currently serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Banking Officer of United Bank. Launching his career at United in 2005, Proctor has held a variety of roles within the commercial banking team. Prior to his current role, he served as Market President of United Bank’s Arlington and Alexandria Markets. Throughout his tenure, he has been recognized for his record commercial loan production and commercial outstandings growth for the Company.

Proctor received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in finance from West Virginia University. An active part of the business and local communities, he currently serves on the board of the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce and the Advisory Board of the Inova Schar Cancer Center, and is the co-chair of the United Bank Charity Classic.

Anna J. Schultheis , Executive Vice President and Secretary to the Board

Anna J. Schultheis serves as Executive Vice President of UBSI and Secretary to the Board of Directors. She joined United in 1982, holding various positions in Executive Administration, and was promoted to Senior Vice President in 2010. Schultheis is a member of the Mid-Ohio Valley Chamber of Commerce, as well as a past President of the Marietta Welfare League and the St. Mary’s School Board. She also previously served on the board of the Parkersburg Catholic Athletic Administration, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Humane Society of Parkersburg and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Committee.

Ami L. Shaver, Executive Vice President and Head of Human Resources, Director, Retail Sales and Service

Ami L. Shaver is Executive Vice President and Head of Human Resources. In her role, she works to strengthen and improve the culture across the organization through pay and benefits, performance management, training and development, recruiting and on-boarding, as well as reinforcing the values of the Company.

Shaver joined the United team in 1995 in Shareholder Relations. Having worked for United Brokerage Services, Inc., a subsidiary of United Bank, in all capacities from 1997 to 2020, including operations, sales and management, she holds the Series 7, 63, 65, 24, and 27 licenses issued by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Since 2005, Shaver has also served as the Director of Retail Sales and Service, in which she is responsible for the retail initiatives in United Bank’s branch locations and leads the Bank’s Customer Care Centers.

Shaver previously served as a member of the West Virginia Bankers Association’s School of Banking Board of Trustees and the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University Board of Trustees. She currently serves on the Board of Governors for West Virginia University of Parkersburg. A graduate of West Virginia University, Shaver earned her undergraduate degree in accounting. She also successfully graduated from the Graduate School of Banking at LSU.

Darren K. Williams, Executive Vice President, Chief Information and Risk Officer

Darren K. Williams serves as Chief Risk Officer at United Bankshares, Inc. He is responsible for overseeing the Company’s strategy for enterprise risk management, including relationships with regulators and supervisory institutions. Williams’ team provides oversight and guidance on key areas of risk management including loan review, compliance matters, the Bank Secrecy Act, fraud and security, the Community Reinvestment Act and Fair Lending.

Mr. Williams joined United through its acquisition of Centra Financial Holdings where he served as Chief Financial Officer and Chief Information Officer. Prior to this, he was a senior manager at Ernst & Young LLP, specializing in financial institutions.

Mr. Williams previously served as the Chief Information Officer for the West Virginia University Foundation. He is a Certified Public Accountant and graduated with a bachelor’s and master’s in Professional Accountancy from West Virginia University.
